How do I register a domain?

Last updated: May 18, 2026 3 min read 26 views

To register a new domain name, you first need to check whether the extension (e.g. .com, .com.tr, .net) is available, then add it to your cart and complete payment. Through Kolan IT you can register both international extensions (gTLDs) and Turkish extensions (the .tr family) from a single panel; activation is largely instant.

  1. Open the kolan.net.tr/en/domain page.
  2. In the search box, enter the domain name you want with or without the extension (e.g. yoursite or yoursite.com).
  3. Click the Search button. The system checks the name across all supported extensions and lists availability.
  4. For extensions that aren't available, the system suggests alternatives (e.g. yoursite.net, yoursite.io).
Tip: You can view current extension prices on the musteri.kolan.net.tr/domain/pricing page; prices vary by extension.

2. Adding an Available Domain to the Cart

  1. In the results list, click Add to Cart next to the domain you want.
  2. Select the registration period from the Period menu (typically 1 to 10 years).
  3. The add-ons screen opens — check what you need:
    • WHOIS Privacy: Your name, address and phone are hidden from WHOIS queries. Not directly applicable to Turkish (.tr) extensions; recommended for gTLDs.
    • DNS Management: Automatically attached to Kolan's DNS servers at registration; no extra action required.
    • Email Forwarding: If you want domain-based email forwarding, add it here.
  4. Click Continue to confirm the cart.

3. Buying Together with a Hosting Plan

If you're building a new site, registering a domain together with a hosting plan is advantageous for both cost and setup. From the cart screen, click Add Hosting to go to hosting plans and add the package that fits you (Personal, Business, WordPress). When hosting and domain are in the same account, DNS routing is done automatically; manual configuration isn't needed.

4. Registrant Information

During registration, entering your registrant information correctly is very important. This information determines the official owner of the domain and will be used for future transfers, renewals or ownership changes.

Important: For Turkish extensions like .com.tr, .org.tr, .net.tr, a Turkish ID number is required for personal applications and a tax number or trademark registration document is required for corporate applications. Without this information, registration cannot be completed; if entered incorrectly, the domain may be suspended.

5. Payment and Confirmation

  1. Click Checkout on the cart screen.
  2. If you don't have a client account, register or sign in with your existing account.
  3. Select your payment method: Credit Card, Wire/EFT or other active methods.
  4. Once payment is confirmed, an invoice and activation email are sent to your registered address.

6. Activation and DNS Propagation

  • gTLDs (.com, .net, .org, .info, .site, etc.): Active within 5-15 minutes after payment confirmation. The registration becomes visible in WHOIS queries.
  • Turkish extensions (.tr family): Activated within 1-24 hours, depending on document verification.
  • DNS propagation: If your domain points to a different server, the change may take 24-48 hours to appear worldwide. During this period, some visitors will see the old address and others the new one; this is normal.
Note: Newly registered domains cannot be transferred to another registrar for 60 days due to an ICANN rule. During this period you can still use the domain, renew it and change DNS settings; only the registrar change is blocked.

If there's anything you're unsure about regarding domain selection, extension preference, or the documents required during registration, you can open a support ticket or reach us via live chat.
